Question

Hi,

I am starting a non-profit online-based teen support group where our selected staff offer an ear to listen and provide resources for at risk youth. I have a question concerning liability. We do background checks for our staff and every conversation is monitored by myself and the rest of the staff overall. My question is, do we need parents' permission to provide kids under the age of 18 with advice/resources? If so, where can I find guidelines or regulations on that?

Thank You!

Answer

You should not be doing anything at all for a person under 18 unless you have either (1) written consent from the parent, or (2) a court order from a judge that allows you to deal with the minor.
