What criteria should the company use to determine where to manufacture the device and whether or not to enter into a collaborative arrangement to manufacture the product or control it internally?
The criteria of where to manufacture depends on a number of things: what do they need as a work force, what level of training/skills/knowledge is needs, what are the tax rates of the places they can go to, is it close to transportation and what of the other infrastructure, what building are available, does it meet the needs and what are the costs of setting up equipment, and on and on. All sorts of money and time invested and they have earned a dime yet if they want to keep control over it internally. But if they wish to most of those issue may go away. If they contemplate subcontracting the manufacturing they need to know who they are doing business with so close scrutiny is necessary. Who are they? How long have the been in business? What's their track record? Do the do quality work? Can they handle it with the equipment and personnel they have or will we have to help upgrade equipment and/or personnel? The the company won't be manufacturing the product they still must be protected with respect to patents, security, quality control and an opt out if the deal isn't working out.
