I have a 65-year-old uncle, unmarried, and childless, who suffered brain damage from a heart attack and will need to enter a nursing home. He owns a house, but was not financially responsible, so he has a lot of debt. He has 2 living sisters in another state who want no responsibility for him. He has 5 nieces and nephews who live nearby. None of us can afford to take on responsibility for him. He has a will, but no living will or power of attorney. Who is responsible for him?
Answer
Unless a family member or a friend steps up, it is likely that the Public Administrator will become his guardian and conservator, and most of his belongings will be liquidated to pay for the costs of his care and housing.
Good luck
