What kind of car is a good first car?

What kind of car is a good first car?
A small used car (Ford Ka, Vauxhall Corsa etc). Cheaper to insure, cheaper to run, easy to manoeuvre and if (when) you trash it you won't too much out of pocket. I'd recommend a manual transmission.
