Question

I purchased a home five years ago with an FHA loan. I was just informed that I do not show as the owner of record for the property, but instead Fannie Mae is listed. Is this normal or is there something that I need to do? I have a grant deed in my name.

Answer

This could be anything from a careless mistake by anyone in the recording process to a wake-up call that your property has been foreclosed. You must have some additional clues, such as whether you've made the payments regularly and have some proof of payment such as lender statements or canceled checks, or the like. Also, who informed you, and why? Are all parties aware of your current address, so that notifications would have reached you? I'd suggest that you start out at the office of the county recorder and see for yourself what the records show for this property. Then, if indeed there are serious irregularities, get a real-estate lawyer.
